This show was filmed the year of the Burlington Northern merger in Spring 1970. The Burlington Route, Great Northern & Northern Pacific, are found in original paint. The area is a railroading mecca. maps are displayed as the needed. Soo Line opens at Shoreham yard. Seen: SW7, F7A, GP35, GP9, RS27, GP30, F7B, FP7, SD40. Next a derailment site. Also, a rare FM H-12-44. A ton Of SOO! An MN&S rare centercab switching. Cedar Lake yard with, CNW / CGW.  Westminster has transfers from CNW, GN, RI. Three yards visited: Milw., BN , CNW. Milwaukee Road has many freights. St. Paul Union Depot is a highlight, with many long shots, of freight trains from area roads. Rock Island trains follow.  A new red/yellow GP40. Koppers Coke Plant, yawn. Better, is a Morning Zephyr dome car ride,a good closer. Here is your BN segment. We roll along the Koppers Coke Plant, it’s huge, and this view is the one. GN Unio n Yard is seen. Overall, there is an abudance of first generation power. An array of rare locomotives. Mainly freight, with the cars shown in trains. Interesting cabooses, some wooden!

Quality of the 8mm looks very good. Film is clean, photography is great.  The sound is excellent. Pro narration is fine. Pentrex has done an outstanding overview of the twin cities, circa 1970.

Classic Chicago Railroading  84 minutes

This was an upgrade from my old VHS tape. The combination with the above makes this set a bargain.

Dick Wallin has captured my favorite era, in my favorite railroading city. There are 32 railroads shown. WOW! Too many to list. I’ll do a few highlights. It’s vintage Chicago, you can’t go wrong.

The 21st Junction first visit of a few there, has many tracks and trains serving Dearborn Station. IC, PRR, Wab, ATSF, C&WI, EL,GM&O, GT, Pennsy Broadway Limited looks sharp! That’s one visit. A busy Roundout Tower, has Milw. and EJ&E. Roosevelt Rd. overpass: N&W, PRR, NYC, RI, C&EI. State Line Tower has many; B&O, IHB, EL,N&W, C&O, Monon, South Shore. Naperville has fast moving CB&Q. Bensenville fields many Milwaukee Road trains. Homewood is ICRR and some City of..passengers, freight. BN merger era racetrack, in winter, then spring 1970. Joliet has a mix of freight, commuter and long haul passenger traffic. Rock Island has the best assortment of old and newer power.

This railroad dvd is jam packed with classic, vintage trains. Dick Wallin’s filming is first rate. The 8mm film is clean, and the volume of trains is super! Natural sound is very fine. Narration is understated and you can listen to the sounds. This dvd includes a no-narration option. While 8mm may not be the finest source, the sound, narration, editing, content, all add value. A must have for the railfan.
